Meeshka's tracking down the family tree...

In 1998, Epic Games released Unreal, a groundbreaking first-person shooter that stunned players with its stunning graphics, vast open environments, and immersive sci-fi world. The game was a critical and commercial success. What truly made Unreal special, however, was the powerful technology running underneath it โ the Unreal Engine. Over the next 28 years, that engine evolved from the technology powering one game into one of the most influential game development tools in the world. Today, Unreal Engine (now on version 5) is used by thousands of developers and powers everything from massive AAA titles (Fortnite, Gears of War, The Matrix Awakens) to indie games, film/TV visual effects (The Mandalorian, House of the Dragon), architecture visualizations, and even virtual production.
